We’ve all heard the old adage, “Laughter is the best medicine.” But have you ever stopped to consider why that might be?
Physically you’re healthier when you’re happier because your body is releasing neurotransmitters and hormones like endorphins, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin.
Endorphins relieve physical pain. Serotonin stimulates feelings of happiness and makes you more social. Dopamine causes you to feel better about yourself, especially when you’re working toward achieving a goal. Oxytocin is associated with touch, especially by loving touch.
Any time you feel good emotionally, your body’s ability to protect and heal you is increased. You’re more likely to enjoy life. You have the incentive to continue thriving.
In addition to those benefits, when you’re happy, you’re more attractive to others. Seems odd, I know, since feeling good doesn’t make you look any different.
What happens when you feel good, though, is that you raise your vibration and your energy. Whatever energy you’re vibrating at any given time goes out into the universe and has an effect on everything else that’s vibrating (which is everything and everyone). None of this happens consciously, it all occurs in the deepest part of our subconscious mind. When other people encounter you, however, they are more drawn to you because they perceive your good energy, and they want to experience it as well.
So give yourself the gift of choosing to feel happy. Think about things for which you’re grateful. Remember times when you had fun. Come in for a hypnotherapy or EFT session. Get a nice massage.
You don’t have to be happy all the time for it to have an effect. But, since we have a tendency to focus on the negative (see my previous blog post), finding ways to feel good makes an excellent counterbalance. And it keeps you healthier in the process!
